Stubborn Mule
No, not all Mule cocktails are made from vodka.
The new Herbie's on the Park (named for Minnesota hockey legend Herb Brooks) actually features a stable of different style mules -- from a smoky mezcal-based recipe, to a bitter Campari-based recipe, to this week's Stubborn Mule: a bourbon-based cocktail.
The Stubborn Mule has a good kick of bourbon that's brightened up by a splash of fresh-squeezed lemon juice (not lime; lime and bourbon aren't exactly friends). It's all topped off with ginger beer -- but not any ginger beer will do. Bar manager Kris Gigstad prefers Minneapolis-made Earl Giles ginger beer; but, if you can't find that, choose a balanced ginger beer that contains some earthiness.
The result is an afternoon sipper that isn't overpowered by bourbon or ginger spice.
Recipe:
- 2 oz Bulleit Bourbon
- ¼ oz fresh lemon juice
- 4-5 oz Earl Giles ginger beer (or similar)
- 1 eyedropper Bittercube Cherry Bark Vanilla Bitters
- Filthy Black Cherry to garnish
Instructions:
Shake bourbon and lemon juice together briefly, over ice. Strain into copper Mule mug filled with fresh ice. Top with ginger beer, and garnish with a cherry.
Herbie's on the Park serves chef'd-up comfort food in a cozy old-world Saint Paul setting. Located steps from The Xcel Energy Center, Rice Park, The Ordway, and the Science Museum of Minnesota, it's a great place for brunch, dinner, and pre- or post-event drinks.
