Basil Gimlet

The Gimlet isn't fancy; if there's ever been a "utilitarian" cocktail this might be it.  Legend has it that, in the days when Scurvy was a problem on the high seas, Royal Navy Surgeon General Sir Thomas Desmond Gimlette created the Gimlet to make sailors' daily ration of citrus more palatable.

Thank you, sir, may I have another?

Muddling basil helps to make the taste a bit less sharp and a bit more pleasing to the modern palette.


Recipe:

  • 2 oz Solveig Gin
  • 3 lime wedges
  • ½ oz simple syrup
  • 4-5 basil leaves
  • Soda water

Instructions:

Muddle gin, limes, simple syrup and basil in a shaker tin.  Shake with ice, and strain into a martini glass.  Top with soda water and garnish with basil leaf.
