Fjord Fiesta

Bar manager Ryan Barott at the Hi-Lo Diner says that they're on a mission to reimagine and resurrect the "dead" cocktails of the 50s, 60s, and 70s.  Tiki drinks definitely aren't dead, but they're of that era, and there are several excellent options on the menu at Hi-Lo.

The Fjord Fiesta is lime green -- just like most Ford Fiestas, no? -- and replaces the more-common rum with a Nordic gin called Aquavit.  The result is a less-sweet cocktail that's crisp, a bit dry, and refreshing.

Perfect cooling and dilution is created by ice that has been crushed to the consistency of snow. A good way to accomplish this is using a wooden mallet and a Lewis bag, such as those sold by Cocktail Kingdom.)

Recipe:

*To make Cinnamon syrup:

  • Heat 1 cup water until it starts to simmer
  • Add 1 cup sugar and incorporate with whisk
  • Add 10 cinnamon sticks and bring to boil
  • Reduce heat to simmer for 15 minutes

Instructions:

Add all ingredients to a hurricane glass, and add crushed ice. Chill/dilute using a swizzle stick. Fill glass with remaining crushed ice, and garnish with cinnamon stick and lemon swath.
